ABOUT THE BAND

The Ohio Brass Band (OBB) was founded in 2008 with the intial purpose of bringing member of several brass bands in the Columbus, Ohio area together to tour the UK in July 2008. Bands that have been represented are: Brass Band of Columbus (10 times winners of NABBA's Championship Section), Central Ohio Brass Band (2007 winners of the Honors Section of NABBA), Scioto Valley Brass and Percussion Company, Chapel Brass, Ohio Valley British Brass Band, and the Alumni Band of The Ohio State University Marching Band (the world’s largest brass band).

The 2008 tour was quite a success. The band represented Ohio well, and new friendships were made both within the Columbus bands and abroad. Upon return the band was invited and accepted the invitation to compete at the 2008 U.S. Open Brass Band Championships. Almost like the mythical Brigadoon we will again wait to see when the Ohio Brass Band will reappear next.

DR. PAUL DROSTE, DIRECTOR

Paul Droste grew up in Cleveland, Ohio and decided, at an early age, that he wanted to be a school band director and music educator. He holds degrees from The Ohio State University, The Eastman School of Music, and a DMA in Euphonium Performance from The University of Arizona. While a student at Ohio State, he was a member of The OSU Marching Band - known as “the world’s largest brass band.”

He later directed this band from 1970 through 1983, and taught in the OSU School of Music for 25 years. In the fall of 1984, he founded the Brass Band of Columbus and directed it for 20 years. For many years he was a brass band clinician for Yamaha International and was responsible for starting several British-style brass bands throughout the US.

In 2007 he was asked to become director of the OSU Marching Band Alumni Band. The Brass Band of Columbus performed at The British Open in 2000, and the Droste family has been to England several times for the National Championships, and the Royal Northern Festival.
